PE -
PE lessons will take place every Wednesday afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their full PE kit (navy/black joggers or shorts, house colour/white t-shirt, and dark jogging top or blue school jumper). If children arrive in the wrong (or no) PE kit, they may be asked to change into a spare school PE kit.
Forest School-
Throughout the year, children have the opportunity to continue with their weekly Forest School sessions in the Forest School area. In autumn term, Forest School sessions will take place every Friday afternoon for one hour. This is an exciting way to learn in an outdoor setting and is proven to improve children’s confidence, self-esteem, and communication skills as well as them having lots of fun! They develop skills in team work, using tools safely and learning about looking after our natural environment. During the session, the children will take part in a range of activities including den-building, wood craft, playing games and cooking on a campfire!
What will my child need?
Forest School will happen in all weathers (unless it is VERY windy or icy). Please make sure your child has plenty of warm clothes including a jumper, gloves and a hat (sunhat in sunny weather). Lots of layers are more effective than a single thicker layer in terms of protecting from the cold. Please make sure your child is suitably dressed to ensure they can fully enjoy the experience.
Homework - Children will be given spellings on Thursdays. They will be tested in a written tests Fridays. It is recommended that spellings are practised for a short period daily.
Reading - Children should be reading regularly to an adult at home - a minimum of 3 times per week. Reading records are checked every Thursday and the number of times your child has read is noted down. Reading certificates and gold coins are awarded after every 30th log in their record.
Spring Term Learning
MATHS
In Year 2 we plan and teach using the white rose scheme of work. This scheme of learning is designed to support a mastery approach to teaching and learning and is consistent with the aims and objectives of the National Curriculum. The children have opportunities to build competency through concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches. The children have opportunities to revisit and consolidate prior learning and build upon this, using strategies to solve problems and mathematical language to explain our reasoning.
This half term we are focussing on Money and Multiplication and Division.

ENGLISH
In Year 2 our literacy is taught through a key text which provides a stimulus for our literacy lessons. Throughout Y2, children are developing their skills in transcription, oral rehearsal of sentences, and sequencing their ideas. The children increase their confidence in writing and are encouraged to write more detailed pieces. The children are taught a range of SPAG objectives and are encouraged to up-level their writing using descriptive language and a range of conjunctions.
We develop their confidence in discussing and sharing their ideas with their peers and with staff
Genres covered in Y2 writing may include: letters, instructions, setting and character descriptions, poetry and recounts.

GEOGRAPHY
Hot and Cold is our topic for this half term. This involves naming and locating the world’s 7 continents and 5 oceans. The children will learn to Identify the location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles. We will be learning about the geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical geography of contrasting non-European country – Kenya.
SCIENCE
Our next unit is all about using materials. In this unit, the children will explore different materials and begin to link properties with the use of the material, carrying out an investigation to decide on the best material for a particular use and imagining what objects would be like if they were made from “silly” materials. They learn about the life of John Boyd Dunlop who invented the pneumatic tyre.
