Maths Mastery

At St Oswald's , we strive for children to have:

  • positive attitude to mathematics as a thought-provoking and valuable subject that is important in everyday life.
  • An understanding of mathematics conceptually through a process of enquiry, reasoning and problem solving
  • Learning opportunities that allow children to work cooperatively, collaboratively and independently
  • Confidence in mathematics where children can use an expanding range of mathematical language to express ideas fluently, thinking critically about concepts
  • Fluency in the fundamentals of maths through varied and frequent practice.

Using the mastery approach to maths, children follow a cohesive series of lessons, exploring key mathematical concepts and structures from Early Years to Year 6. They use a Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach to explore and build depth to their mathematical skills and knowledge. Emphasis is made on children's instant recall of key facts using daily rehearsal, Mastering number programme, TT Rockstars and Numbots. Children are given opportunities to think critically and explain their thoughts, using stem sentences as support.
