PSHCE

Part of the PSHCE curriculum that we offer at St Oswald’s is through Jigsaw

Jigsaw 3-11 offers Primary PSHCE including statutory Relationships and Health Education (England), in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work. This comprehensive programme gives children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHCE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.  As part of our PSHE curriculum the school follows ‘Taking Care’ – a personal safety curriculum provided by Warwickshire’s Safeguarding Team.  This curriculum helps children learn how to keep themselves safer.  This is delivered in the Autumn Term and then can be revisited as and when needed throughout the year.  We also have other events which support the children’s Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education like nurse visits, road safety work, national events and local events.

Jigsaw

How the big picture fits together

Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year.

Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Relationships and Health Education (PSHE) and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills.

Puzzles are launched in an assembly containing an original song, with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level), building sequentially through the school year, facilitating whole-school learning themes.

The various teaching and learning activities are engaging and mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation and the Early Years (EYFS) planning is aligned to the National Early Years Framework (England).

Jigsaw’s Units of Work (Puzzles) are:

1. Being Me in My World – Autumn 1

Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters.

2. Celebrating Difference – Autumn 2

Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and diversity work.

3. Dreams and Goals – Spring 1

Includes goal-setting, aspirations for yourself and the world and working together.

4. Healthy Me – Spring 2

Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.

5. Relationships – Summer 1

Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills.

6. Changing Me – Summer 2

This puzzle includes sex and relationships education in the context of coping positively with change. (includes age-appropriate sex education)

Protective Behaviours by The Taking Care Project

The two themes of Protective Behaviours are:

  1. We all have the right to feel safe all the time
  2. There is nothing so awful (or too little) we can’t talk about it with someone.  In other words: We can talk with someone about anything, even if it’s awful or small.

These themes will be explored with each class throughout the school year but specific teaching of this curriculum takes place during the Autumn Term. Children will learn to name their feelings, recognise their Early Warning Signs, develop a Personal Network of people who they trust and feel able to talk to. They will discuss body privacy and in order to do this we need to use language which is not misunderstood.  School staff will use agreed biologically correct terminology for naming body parts so everyone knows what is being talked about. Children will also discuss safe and unsafe secrets and begin to explore when it is important to tell someone in their Personal Network.

The seven strategies that run throughout the programme are:

Theme Reinforcement

One Step Removed

Network Review

Persistence

Protective Interruption

Risking on Purpose

Language of Safety
