Year 5 Class 2023/24
Welcome to Year 5!
Who's Who?
Miss White - Class Teacher
Mrs Bishop - Teaching Assistant
Reading
Children should be reading regularly to an adult at home - a minimum of 3 times per week. Children are responsible for changing their own reading book at any suitable time throughout the week. Reading records are checked every Friday and the number of times your child has read is noted down. Reading is rewarded with a reading certificate and gold coin after every 20th log in their record.
Homework & Spellings
Children will be given spellings and times tables on Fridays. Both will be tested in a written test the following Friday. It is recommended that spellings are practised for a short period daily. When testing times tables, focus on facts that children are unable to recall automatically. I will be keeping a running record of children's scores throughout the year.
PE
PE lessons will take place every Thursday afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their full PE kit (navy/black joggers or shorts, house colour/white t-shirt, and dark jogging top or blue school jumper). If children arrive in the wrong (or no) PE kit, they may be asked to change into a spare school PE kit.
Forest School
Forest School sessions will take place every Wednesday afternoon for one hour. It it necessary to ensure children bring appropriate kit for these sessions as finding and supplying kit to those without will take valuable time out of the session.
Spring 2 Term - 2024
English
'Born worlds apart: a wolf from Alaska and a boy from Africa...'
This half term, we will be reading a fiction text, 'Eye of the Wolf', by Daniel Pennac. This is a mysterious, thought-provoking story about a boy and a wolf who stand eye to eye in a zoo and share the tale of their life. We will use this book as inspiration to write a recount of events (in the form of a diary) in role as the boy and the wolf. Then we will produce a balanced argument about zoos.
Maths
We will start a new unit 'Perimeter and Area' in the first week, where children will learn to calculate the perimeter of rectilinear shapes, calculate and compare the area of rectangles, and estimate the area of irregular shapes. After this shorter unit, we will move on to 'Statistics', 'Shape' and 'Position and Direction'.
Confidence with times tables is vital for this unit so ensure children are practising frequently. Children have access to Times Tables Rock Stars and you can find useful websites linked below.
Science
Our science unit is Living Things & Their Habitats. In this unit, children will be taught to:
- describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird
- describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals
As part of this unit, children have already reared chicks from egg to young chick and observed live hatching and changes that took place during the chicks' life cycles.
Topic
Our history topic, Greek Legacy, is all about Ancient Greek influence and the legacy they left around the world. This topic will run throughout the whole of Summer Term. Please find the Knowledge Organiser below, detailing the information children will learn over the course of the topic.
Religious Education
Our 'Understanding Christianity - Gospel' unit will explore the question 'What would Jesus do?'
