Physical Education & Outdoor Learning

Physical Education

Intent

PE will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. High-quality PE is a physical and cultural entitlement for all pupils, regardless of their starting points. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities, within school and beyond, will build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. PE can provide knowledge through instruction, practice and feedback so pupils flourish within their phase. We believe that developing competence is important because of its relationship with motivation and confidence.

Our PE Curriculum is sequenced coherently so skills build progressively.  In Early Years and KS1, pupils focus on developing fundamental movement skills.  In KS1 pupils apply skills in a range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.  In KS2 pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills. They learn how to use them in different ways and link them to make actions and sequences of movement, whilst incorporating rules, strategies and tactics. For all pupils, we intend that there is healthy participation, to contribute towards pupils leading healthy, active lives.

We aim for pupils to:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • be physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

Impact

By the end of the curriculum, all pupils will build on prior achievement and increase confidence, self-esteem and their desire to learn.  As a result, pupils develop their ability to co-operate with others, communicate effectively and reflect and improve on previous performances.

This will be assessed through a multi-faceted approach including half termly skills tracking, skillful questioning lesson by lesson, retrieval practices and summative disciplinary tasks within a competitive environment.

Leaders will monitor the quality and impact of the PE Curriculum through regular pupil voice and assess the extent to which pupils are developing their sporting skills and knowledge.

SEND/Disadvantaged

Our ambition is for all of our pupils to access the full PE Curriculum.  These pupils will be supported to provide them with full accessibility to the PE Curriculum.

The school benefits from an established Forest School area and we follow the six principles in delivering this outdoor education opportunity to our pupils. The principles are:

  1. Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.
  2. Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world.
  3. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
  4. Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
  5. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
  6. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners, who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.

Swimming and Water Safety

Swimming is a very important life skill and by the end of Key Stage 2 pupils will be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

For pupils in Key Stage 1, the aim is to develop water confidence so that they successfully achieve intended outcomes by the end of Key Stage 2.

Other Opportunities

In addition to our core curriculum offer, pupils have other opportunities to engage in physical activity, sporting competition and experience of other sports with the aim of developing a life long enthusiasm for leading healthy and active life styles. These include:

  • House sporting competitions
  • School based sporting festivals
  • Forest School
  • Inter-schools competitions
