Summer Term 2024

This term we have lots of exciting topics.  Please find some information below that tells you about our learning:

Below are our English topic books for this term:

Children will be writing in various different contexts to broaden their sentence construction, vocabulary use and writing stamina.

Reading

Children will bring home their phonics reading book every Thursday.  We encourage children to read with a grown up at least three times a week and we ask that children's diaries are signed each time they have been heard read.  Below are some useful references for questions to ask children as they read.

Reading certificates are awarded after every twentieth log in their reading diary.  Children will also bring home a shared reading book each week chosen from the school library.  This book  should be read with your child as it may contain some words that your child is unable to decode and read independently.   Reading books need to be back in school on a Thursday to be changed.

Phonics

Children will continue to have daily phonics lessons.  In the Summer Term, Children in Year 1 will undertake the Phonics Screening Check.  This is a short statutory assessment that assesses a child's ability to decode and read real and nonsense words.

Maths

In Maths, we are moving on to multiplication and division, fractions and Place value within 100.  We will continue to build on our number composition through our Mastering Number sessions as well as developing counting fluency.  We will be explaining 'why' and 'how we know' to deepen our thinking further.

Science

In Science, we are investigating plants.   Children will be working scientifically to identify and name a variety of common garden plants including deciduous and evergreen trees.  We will be identifying the basic structure of these plants and trees.

Topic

Our topic this term is Castle Adventures and starts with an exciting trip to Warwick Castle.  In Geography we will be learning about the four different countries in the UK and their capital cities.  We will be locating castles within these countries including those that are local to Warwickshire.  In History, we will be learning about King Charles III and where he lives.

RE

In our unit on Islam we will be comparing Islam to Christianity.  We will be thinking about why it is important to care for the people and the world around us.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be thinking about Relationships - what relationships we have and who we have them with.  We will be thinking about our families and friendships and how we build and develop positive relationships with the people around us.

PE and Forest School

PE shall be taught on a Wednesday afternoon - children should continue to come into school in their PE Kit.  Please see the school uniform policy for acceptable PE clothes.  Forest School is on a Tuesday afternoon.  Children should bring a change of warm clothes including wellies/boots that are acceptable for wet, muddy conditions.
