Reading

Children should be reading regularly to an adult at home - a minimum of 3 times per week. Year 6 reading books can be changed every Monday and Friday. Reading records are checked weekly and the number of times your child has read is noted down. Reading is rewarded with a reading certificate and gold coin after every 20th read. 

Homework

Year 6 children will take home a spelling sheet each Friday with their weekly spellings. They will be tested on these spellings the following Friday. We recommend that spellings are practised every day.

All children have access to Times Tables Rockstars and should be practicing for 10 minutes each day.

We highly encourage homework to be completed, as well as any extra homework given, in preparation for SATs.

PE 

PE lessons will take place every Wednesday afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their full PE kit (navy/black joggers or shorts, house colour/white t-shirt, and dark jogging top or blue school jumper). If children arrive in the wrong (or no) PE kit, they may be asked to change into a spare school PE kit.

Summer Term - 2026

English

This term, we are reading the short story, 'The Man with the Yellow Face' by Anthony Horowitz. We will be writing a character description about the main character, as well as our own short mystery/suspense story, inspired by Horowitz's story.

In the second half term, we will be reading a novel called 'Floodland' by Marcus Sedgwick. Our writing outcomes linked to this will be to write a diary recount and a balanced argument based on the text.

Maths

This term, we will start by revising place value for numbers up to ten million. We will then move on to revising strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ater that, we will move on to fractions and converting units.

Science

This term, our unit is Light. Children will:

• understand that light appears to travel in straight lines
• explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye
• explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them

Next half term, our unit is Electricity. Children will:

• associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit.
• compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches
• Use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram.

 

Geography

This term, our unit is Awesome Earth. Children will learn to:

• locate the world's countries, focusing on key physical characteristics, countries and major cities
• Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
• Describe and understand key aspects of physical geography – volcanoes and earthquakes.
• Use maps, atlases, globes and digital / computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied.
