Reading
Children should be reading regularly to an adult at home – a minimum of 3 times per week. Children are responsible for changing their own reading book at any suitable time throughout the week. Reading records are checked weekly and the number of times your child has read is noted down. Readers are rewarded with a reading certificate and a gold coin after every 30th log into their record. Research has shown that reading at home helps children to make progress at school.
Homework & Spellings
Children will be given spellings on Mondays. Children will be tested on the following Monday. It is recommended that spelling is practised for a short period daily. Children should also be practising on Timetable Rock Star to help with their fluency at tables. The program tailors the tables set for the child based on their individual needs. There will be extra homework pieces added in throughout the year to support learning.
PE
PE lessons will take place every Tuesday afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their full PE kit (navy/black joggers or shorts, house colour/white T-shirt, and dark jogging top or blue school jumper). If children arrive in the wrong (or no) PE kit, they may be asked to change into a spare school PE kit.
Swimming
Every Wednesday, Year 5 children will attend their swimming lesson. These sessions provide an opportunity for pupils to develop their swimming skills, build confidence in the water and enjoy being active. Swimming forms an important part of the PE curriculum, and we look forward to seeing the children make progress throughout the term.
English
This term, pupils will explore Arthur and the Golden Rope, a rich and engaging adventure story inspired by Norse mythology. Through reading and discussion, children will develop their understanding of character, setting and plot, while exploring how authors use language to create atmosphere and excitement. The class will challenge themselves by writing a sequel story.
Later in the term, pupils will study the classic novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Through this fantasy text, children will analyse themes of courage, friendship, loyalty and sacrifice while developing deeper comprehension skills. We will finish the term by writing a survival guide to Narnia.
Maths
This term in Maths, Year 5 will focus on developing a secure understanding of place value and fractions. Children will read, write, order and compare numbers, exploring the value of digits in larger numbers and using this knowledge to solve problems. They will also deepen their understanding of fractions by recognising equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, and learning how fractions relate to decimals and whole numbers. Through practical activities, reasoning tasks and problem-solving challenges, pupils will build confidence and fluency in applying their mathematical skills.
Science
This term in Science, Year 5 will be learning about Properties and Changes of Materials. Children will investigate and compare a variety of everyday materials, exploring their properties and how these make them suitable for different uses. They will learn about reversible and irreversible changes, including dissolving, mixing and separating materials, as well as how some changes create new materials. Through practical investigations and scientific enquiry, pupils will develop their observation, prediction and reasoning skills, helping them to think and work like scientists while gaining a deeper understanding of the world around them.
History
This term, Year 5 will be stepping back in time to explore the fascinating world of the Vikings. Children will learn about whom the Vikings were, where they came from and why they travelled across Europe. We will investigate Viking life, including their homes, beliefs, trade, exploration and famous raids. Through history, geography, reading and writing activities, pupils will examine evidence from the past and discover how the Vikings have influenced life in Britain today. We look forward to an exciting term filled with enquiry, creativity and historical discovery as we uncover the legacy of these remarkable seafarers.
