Reading
Children should be reading regularly to an adult at home - at minimum of 3 times a week. Year 4 home reading books can be changed every Tuesday and Friday. Reading Records are checked every Friday and the number of times your child had read is noted down. Reading certificates are awarded every 20th log in their record.
Homework: Spellings, Reading and Times Tables
Year 4 children will take home one piece of homework every Friday which will have a spelling focus. These words will be tested in a written spelling test in school the following Friday. We recommend that spellings are practiced every day.
Children will also take home a new reading book every Friday. This book will correspond with their reading level in school. Children are encouraged to read for 10 minutes every day. Reading can be recorded in their red reading logs.
When testing times tables, focus on facts that children are unable to recall automatically. All children have access to Times Tables Rockstars and should be practising for 10 minutes each day. All Year 4's in the country have a multiplication assessment at the end of the year and this is the best way to practice for that.
P.E and Forest School
P.E will take place every Monday. Children should come into school wearing their full P.E kit (navy/black joggers or shorts, house colour/white t-shirt and dark jogging top or blue school jumper). Forest School will take place every Thursday. Children must bring their waterproofs/outdoor clothing and wellies in a separate bag as Forest School takes place in most weather conditions.
Autumn Term 2026
English
This term, we will be looking at the text ‘Operation Gadgetman’ and write a character description of one of the main characters and an advert to persuade readers to purchase a spy kit. In the second half term, we will read 'Firebird' to rewrite the story in our own words as well as write a letter in the role of one of the characters.
Maths
This half term, we will be focusing on place value and beginning our work on addition and subtraction.
The children will be learning to recognise, read and write numbers up to 10,000, understanding the value of each digit and comparing and ordering numbers. We will also explore rounding numbers and finding numbers that are more or less than a given amount.
As we move into addition and subtraction, the children will use formal written methods to solve calculations accurately. They will also develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills by explaining their methods and applying them to real-life contexts.
Science
This term, our Science topic is Electricity. The children will learn how electrical appliances work, identify common electrical components such as cells, wires, bulbs, buzzers and switches, and build simple circuits. They will investigate what happens when circuits are changed and learn how electricity travels around a complete circuit.
Next term, we will move on to Sound. The children will explore how sounds are made through vibrations, how sound travels to our ears, and how pitch and volume can be changed. They will carry out investigations to deepen their understanding of how we hear and experience sound in everyday life.
Throughout both topics, the children will develop their scientific enquiry skills by making predictions, carrying out investigations, observing results and drawing conclusions.
Geography
This term, our Geography topic is Farm to Fork. The children will learn where food comes from, including how it is grown, reared and transported. They will explore different types of farming, learn why certain crops grow in different countries, and discover how food is traded around the world. The children will also develop their map skills and understand the importance of fair trade.
