Physical Education & Outdoor Learning

The aim of our PE and Outdoor Education Curriculum is to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

In Key Stage 1 pupils are taught to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • perform dances using simple movement patterns

In Key Stage 2 pupils are taught to:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games such as badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance through athletics
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best

The PE and Outdoor education curriculum is delivered by a combination of school staff and qualified coaching staff.

The school benefits from an established Forest School area and we follow the six principles in delivering this outdoor education opportunity to our pupils. The principles are:

  1. Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.
  2. Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world.
  3. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
  4. Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
  5. Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
  6. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners, who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.

Swimming and Water Safety

Swimming is a very important life skill and by the end of Key Stage 2 pupils will be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

For pupils in Key Stage 1, the aim is to develop water confidence so that they successfully achieve intended outcomes by the end of Key Stage 2.

Other Opportunities

In addition to our core curriculum offer, pupils have other opportunities to engage in physical activity, sporting competition and experience of other sports with the aim of developing a life long enthusiasm for leading healthy and active life styles. These include:

  • House sporting competitions
  • Forest School
